As Spring has sprung and Summer is just around the corner, we forget how quickly the sun can burn. This is a another guest post from Krystal Curtis. But I couldn’t keep from adding a couple extra thoughts on the topics. My notes are in a bold and italic style. Feel free to share your own thoughts in the comments below! —Mike
First, the weather plays a huge influence. You can have a great day at the park or a wet sloppy day. Keep an eye on the sky and your weather app throughout the day. If you have youngsters, that are not fans of being rained on, I am sure that they are going to complain that it is raining and that they are wanting to get somewhere dry. Now the Feasthaus is a great place to stay dry and get something to eat and watch this season’s great new show “Bringing back the 90’s”. Some rides do stay in operation while it rains, but if it gets too severe, then they will shut down until it lightens up. Ponchos are a great thing to keep on hand. Kings Island sells them, but once it starts raining they run low quickly. Umbrellas are also great to keep dry, but they can be a hassle to carry around. Now let’s look on the happier side of weather, when it is dry and warm. Watch out for sunburns. If you burn easily keep a thing of sunscreen on hand. Once again, they do sell them at the park, but you do get a better variety of specifics at your local stores outside the park.
Your car is a great place to store some of that extra gear. You can keep a change of clothes, extra diapers, jackets, ponchos, sunscreen and umbrellas in the car. Have a runner or two in your group, so everyone doesn’t have to walk out to the car. Make sure he or she gets their hand stamped at the exit, so they can come right back in!
Secondly, certain rides allow personal belongings to stay on the platform while you ride, others like Mystic Timbers, Banshee, Firehawk, and Flight of Fear do not. I have found a way to avoid renting one of the $15 lockers by these rides… fanny packs! If all I need for the day is my phone, keys, wallet, and sunscreen, having a fanny pack allows me to ride the rides without needing a locker. I know they are not exactly “in style” but trust me your adrenaline will thank you later. When you sit in a ride seat, turn the fanny pack to the side by your hips. Buckle up and enjoy your ride, screams and laughter!
If you have small children, or even if your kids have outgrown them, but you still have your stroller, here is one of my favorite Park Hacks, use a stroller as a traveling locker!
Lastly, If you want to get souvenirs, pictures and big stuffed animals, get them right before you leave. It will save multiple trips to the car, as well as spending money on lockers. After you get off rides, or anywhere youo get your picture taken, like at the front gate, they will hand you a FunPix card. Keep all your cards and at the end of the day go to the photo booth located by the International Street Skyline and purchase them there.
Hope you enjoy these tips as Ohio weather can change in blink of an eye, stay dry and don’t get burned, especially all in one day.
